Our department's Res. Asst. Alperen Özdemir delivered a presentation titled “Historical Geographic Information Systems and Artificial Intelligence” as the sixth guest of the online Digital History and Historical Geography Conferences series.
In the talk, the combined use of Historical Geographic Information Systems (HGIS) and artificial intelligence methods in the digitization process of historical archives was discussed; the extraction of structured data from texts, the integration of this data into spatial analysis and mapping processes, and the contributions providing speed–scale–reproducibility in research were addressed.

Özdemir shared concrete applications of the steps of natural language processing (NLP), processing of OCR outputs, and geographic visualization with examples from his study on Istanbul Sharia Registers. In the session, topics such as data heterogeneity, OCR performance, and the need for domain expertise were also discussed.
